Ready in Season

Be ready in season and out of season —2 Timothy 4:2

It’s Kairos Season again. Three times a year a retreat is held at one of the camps at Angola. Preparations begin weeks in advance with weekly training meetings. The first such meeting was Saturday. I’m not a big fan of meetings, but I enjoyed the fellowship and the beginning excitement as we look forward to another retreat when God always shows up. I left Baton Rouge excited and ready for more.
Within a few hours of my return to Lafayette I was burned out and exhausted. I know that the work God has for me here is at least as important as that at Angola. Why is the daily work of baby sitting and such not so exciting and terribly exhausting?

““Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season.” In other words, we should “be ready” whether we feel like it or not. If we do only what we feel inclined to do, some of us would never do anything. There are some people who are totally unemployable in the spiritual realm. They are spiritually feeble and weak, and they refuse to do anything unless they are supernaturally inspired. The proof that our relationship is right with God is that we do our best whether we feel inspired or not.”

I guess my relationship with God must not be right. For some assignments I am not so inspired and He doesn’t get my best.  I’m not sure how to deal with this situation.  Should I try to “whip up” more enthusiasm for the tasks that I don’t find inspiring? Should I accept that spiritual highs are not the norm and that when God gifts us with highs we need to be grateful and use the energy generated to get us through the doldrums?

Some folks seem to be perpetually high, enthusiastic no matter the task. What’s their secret? Are they specially blessed with spiritual high 24/7 or are they good at faking it?

I know the truth of the verse. Be ready in season and out of season. I’m just a bit slow on the execution.

Maybe the key is in recognizing that God always shows up. His miracle business is 24/7. I just need better awareness of His moves and His presence.  We refer to “Kairos” as God’s Special Time. Maybe I need a revelation that all His Time is Special.

Here’s praying that I can keep one foot in front of the other and that when He moves today I won’t be a block and maybe I’ll even be aware of just how special it is.

Be blessed.
