A follower of Jesus loves his quiet time. In those times, I regain perspective. My tensions loosen. I am renewed. My quiet times are a little different. My quiet times come while I swim. They are not technically “quiet.” I swim with waterproof earbuds. Music, or more rarely a good book, provides the environment. He speaks and, at least sometimes, I listen.
Sometimes, I get in the water feeling pretty good about life. That’s the exception. Usually, I am in a fight. I may be making war plans or licking my wounds. Sometimes the fight isn’t one-on-one, but more like a brawl with multiple enemies: some obvious, some more sneaky.
In the water, things change. Sometimes I realize the fight is only in my head and I just need to move on. Sometimes, my to-do list shrinks as He takes on bulk of the battle. Sometimes, a new approach becomes obvious. In all cases, the battle is the Lord’s. My part is minimized but clearer. My part becomes doable. The mountain moving is His.
In the unusual times, when all seems peaceful, I learn it’s because I’m no threat and I am not worthy of the enemy’s attention. In those times, new ideas arise, new challenges are revealed, the best blog posts are drafted. New battles start.
Me and the Lord, not just hanging.
