Matthew 6:31-34 (New King James Version) 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Read this passage at least a couple of times. If we could really rest on this scripture imagine how it would change our lives. Worry would lose its grip on us. Yet we keep seeking our security in the things the world values—bank accounts, stable jobs, and a strong national and global economy—we are filled with anxiety at every fluctuation. 1 Corinthians 12 Spiritual Gifts: Unity in Diversity  1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: Most Christians have, at some time, have been taught about the Gifts of the Spirit. We know that these gifts are not personal gives but gifts to serve Christ and his church. Yet we treat them like Christmas gifts showing preference for certain gifts and exhibiting more pride in the gifts we are given than in implementing them into our church. We treat the gifts as confirmations of our spirituality even knowing that these gracious gifts are meant to shape our churches into the image of Christ. That way, Christians will be encouraged and unbelievers will be drawn to the Savior. Perhaps most sadly of all we don’t deal with the issue of what happens if Christians do  not know or use their gifts? What are your spiritual gifts? What are your family members gifts? When did you last use your gift? Do you recognize the gifts in others and encourage them to use their gifts? Last night the Cajun Basketball team won their tenth game in a row. There were over 8000 fans at the game. A month ago they had one of their worst seasons in memory and we were all ready to “wait until next year.” Now we are looking forward to Saturday night’s game in Monroe when they will be playing for a championship. The team has alot more fans now than a month ago. Many have jumped on the bandwagon. The bandwagon is a familiar concept. Remember last year when the Saints had their Superbowl year?  Everyone was claiming to have been a Saints fan for years. Jesus was familiar with the concept on Palm Sunday the crowds wanted to crown Him king, by Friday they were screaming for his crucifixion.  Aren’t we often bandwagon Christians? We are great fans of Jesus in the right crowd or when it’s popular to be a Christian. When times get tough we get quiet or even turn in another direction. Christ doesn’t need fair weather fans. To Be “in Christ Jesus”     “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1  Being “In Christ” is a multifaceted concept. It involves much but one aspect of being “In Christ” can be explained by considering the Ark. The ark was waterproof. God told Noah, “put pitch on the inside and on the outside” (Genesis 6:14). The word “pitch” in the Hebrew is kapar, and it is exactly the same word translated as “atonement.” You see, we are in Jesus as Noah was in that ark. Just as the storms of God’s wrath beat upon that ark, the storms of God’s wrath beat upon the Lord Jesus. But we are on the inside, and not one drop of judgment can come through. Consider all the things Paul lists that we are protected from, that will not separate us from the love of Christ: Romans 8: 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36 As Christians we are often confronted with the “Problem of Evil.” It goes something like this: If there is a God, and He is good, why is there suffering in world? Why does He allow it? Is He powerless to prevent it? How should we respond? God did not create evil. God created perfection. God made man perfectly free. The freedom He granted man meant that he had to be free to choose to love.  Then in order to choose to love, we must be able to choose not to love. This freedom of choice gave rise to evil, for man’s freedom meant he could make a wrong choice. Most of the evil in the world arises from men’s decision not to love. God’s gift of free will is tremendous. Which kind of love do you want from others? A forced love or a free love? Which sounds better, “I love you” or “I have to love you”? God feels the same way. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding.”—Matthew 6:1 MSG Sometimes nothing captures the essence of a verse like a modern paraphrase. Oh, how we love it when we think we are being “good.” We laugh at the rich man pouring his offering loudly into the collection basket; but are we any better? Look at me, God, helping those less fortunate, holding a door for a lady, speaking an encouraging word. Sometimes we are so fake we make even ourselves sick. I think we really want to be real, like Jesus was. We love realness in others and, sometimes secretly, want it in ourselves. We are quick to spot a fake, less so when it is us.  It is so foolish to be anything but real before the One who sees through us. He already knows us. It takes little to be real before Him; why not do it. Nick

KK on a good day I am writing this while listening to Kaydence cry from her room. Apparently she has been quick to cry all day. She’s had a “bad day.” That is defined as a day when nothing seems to go her way. I can sympathize. I have days like that. Some days I can’t seem to do anything right, in spite of what I feel are good intentions and honest effort. I sometimes wonder why we have such days. I think it may be because we need to learn not to rely on our own effort. What may be a bad day for us; may be a good day in God’s eyes. A day when we recognize our need for Him and our dependence on Him is a good day. Although such a day may be accompanied by frustration and tears.  Perhaps we could avoid, or at least greatly reduce, such days by acknowledging our dependence on Him up front, first thing in the morning. Last night was “Fear the Beard” night at the Cajundome. A fun promotion based on freshman J. J. Thomas’ bearded countenance. A look which has been adopted by other players. The stands were filled with the bearded, real and fake.  After having started the season by losing to practically everyone, the UL basketball team last night won their ninth game in a row now challenging for first place in the division.  Just a  month ago the fans were trying to find satisfaction in a “wait ’til next year” attitude. This morning visions of championship are dancing in their heads. Life is like that. Are you on a streak now? A winning streak or a losing streak? Sometimes it seems in life we can’t do anything right and at other times it seems we can’t do anything wrong. We can either be very up on ourselves or very down. Those streaks can turn around over night.  Watching our won/loss record can cause anxiety and uncertainty. The key to a satisfied life is not to look at our won/loss record. How we seem to be doing in life is not the key. Rather, how are we doing in matters of eternal […]
