“Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding.”—Matthew 6:1 MSG
Sometimes nothing captures the essence of a verse like a modern paraphrase. Oh, how we love it when we think we are being “good.” We laugh at the rich man pouring his offering loudly into the collection basket; but are we any better? Look at me, God, helping those less fortunate, holding a door for a lady, speaking an encouraging word. Sometimes we are so fake we make even ourselves sick.
I think we really want to be real, like Jesus was. We love realness in others and, sometimes secretly, want it in ourselves. We are quick to spot a fake, less so when it is us.
It is so foolish to be anything but real before the One who sees through us. He already knows us. It takes little to be real before Him; why not do it.
