Sunday Pastor T discussed the Light of the World. The topic deserves further comment. Jesus used this phrase to describe himself and his disciples. In John 8:12 Jesus applies the title to himself. 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Again in John 9:5, He says: When I am in the world, I am the Light of the World. He says this in connection with the healing of a man born blind.
This episode leads into John 9:39 where explains that he came to this world, so that the blind may see. Jesus also used that term to refer to his disciples in Matthew 5:14-16: 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Viewed together these verses establish some important facts:
1. The natural world is in darkness.
2. The natural man is blind.
3. Jesus, while in the world, is the light of the world.
4. Now, as His disciplines, we are to light the world, through the illumination of Christ inside of us.
5. The light is seen in good works.
6. The purpose of the light is to glorify God.
Just think how much better we would be if we could keep these facts straight. We sometimes think that the natural world has some light to share. We become impressed by what appears to be the brilliance of the world and we are fooled every time.
We sometimes slip into believing that natural man is not blind. We forget how blind we were to truth before Jesus came into our lives.
We often are deceived into believing we can have no impact on this dark world or that we can have impact apart from Jesus within.
We confuse the method of our light shining… it’s not our words, it’s our good works. Works that are only good because they are enabled by the Spirit within.
Finally, the purpose of light is to give Glory to God.
If we can keep these facts straight, we will be blessed to be a blessing.
